The house was unusually quiet for a December evening. Christmas lights blinked softly around the living room, but Bethany felt a strange heaviness in the air. Larry had been acting different all week—smiling at his phone, stepping outside to take calls, and avoiding her questions about the Christmas party they were supposedly planning together.
Bethany stood near the hallway when she heard Larry’s voice drift from the guest room.
Larry (whispering): “Yes, Sharra… everything is set. Just make sure Bethany doesn’t find out before Christmas Eve.”
Bethany’s heart skipped.
Sharra?
A secret plan?
Her hands trembled as she stepped closer to the door.
Larry: “The surprise will change everything. She won’t see it coming.”
Bethany’s mind raced. Change everything? The words echoed like a warning bell. She quietly walked away before Larry could notice her, but the damage was already done.

That night at dinner, Bethany tried to act normal, but her eyes never left Larry.
Bethany (calmly): “So… about the Christmas party. Have you finalized anything yet?”
Larry hesitated—just for a second too long.

Larry stood frozen, his face pale.
Larry: “Bethany, please… it’s not what you think.”
Bethany: “Then why keep it a secret?!”

On Christmas Eve, the party went on as planned. Guests laughed, music played, and the tree sparkled—but Bethany felt like an outsider in her own home.
Just as everyone gathered around, Sharra stepped forward.
Sharra: “This night was planned for one reason…”
Bethany’s chest tightened.
Larry walked toward Bethany, his eyes full of emotion.
Larry: “I planned this with Sharra because I wanted it to be perfect.”
He reached into his pocket—not for betrayal, but for a small velvet box.
The room gasped.
Larry: “Bethany, after everything we’ve been through, I wanted to remind you how important you are to me.”
Bethany’s tears fell freely as he opened the box—inside was a ring and a handwritten letter apologizing for every mistake, every silence, every doubt.
Larry: “I wasn’t planning a secret against you. I was planning a second chance for us.”
